Compactness of a Rolled I-Shape Or Channel in Flexure, Radius of Gyration of Compression Area:

Calculation:
Designer/Checker:

Input:

(Note: All input Metric units are converted to English units for the equations below and then the output English units are converted back to Metric)

AISC Table B4.1.b, Case 10 and Case 15.
This calculation applies to rolled doubly symmetric I shaped sections and channels bent about their major axis in flexure.

Width of the flange (bf - in or mm)
Height of web (h - in or mm)
*Height of compression portion of web (hc - in or mm)
Steel yield strength (fy - ksi or MPa)
Thickness of the flange (tf - in or mm)
Thickness of the web (tw - in or mm)
*hc is the distance from section centroid to the compression flange.  In doubly symmetric I - shapes and channels hc = h/2.
