Calculate Available Strength Of Any Weld:

(Note: All input Metric units are converted to English units for the equations below and then the output English units are converted back to Metric)

AISC Table J2.5:
The following is for calculating the strength of any weld in a connection.  Note, it is acceptable to sum the capacities of individual fillet weld elements, neglecting load-deformation, if no increase in strength due to the loading angle is assumed.  Therefore this calculation alone can be conservatively used to determine the strength of fillet weld groups without considering increasing strength for loading angle and accounting for load-deformation.

Note: For Complete-Joint-Penetration Groove Welds the strength of the joint is controlled by the base metal not the weld.  Therefore the weld strength is not considered in design.
Weld Strength Considerations For Partial-Joint-Penetration Groove Welds including Flare Vee and Flare Bevel:
Tension normal to weld and compression connections designed to bear other than columns.
 Compression connections not finished-to-bear.
 Shear.
Plug and Slot Welds:
Shear parallel to the faying surface on the effective area.
Fillet Welds:
 Shear considered only.

Effective area of weld (Aw - sq in or sq mm)
For fillet and groove welds Aw is equal to the length of weld (l) multiplied by the effective throat (t).  For plug or slot welds Aw is equal to the nominal cross-sectional area of the hole or slot in the plane of the faying surface.
Electrode classification number, electrode strength (FEXX - ksi or MPa)
